WHAT IS THE WORLD BANK

The World Bank is a vital source of financial and technical assistance to developing countries around the world. We are not a bank in the common sense.

The Bank is always actively involved in financial sector restructuring and regulatory work, continuing to help nations move towards market-based economies through financial sector restructuring, infrastructure development, privatization and regulation. Special efforts are being made to expand activities in the field of education, such as early childhood development and girls' education. TRAINEESHIP AND CAREER OPPORTUNITIES

The Bank looks for experts with higher academic achievements and/or technical professional credentials including Masters or PhD programs. A successful record of demonstrated performance and results (generally a minimum of five years of relevant experience). A broad understanding of development issues (global and/or regional knowledge of development country issues) and international work experience preferably at the policy level. Work experience in the private sector is also valued and is viewed as a way of renewing and updating the Bank's skills base and improving diversity.

Candidates must possess excellent interpersonal and communication skills for working in an international and team-based environment. In addition to proficiency in English, language skills in Arabic, Chinese, French, Portuguese, Russian, or Spanish are often required.

The Bank has also employment opportunities for young and motivated individuals:
a. The Young Professionals Program (YPP) is a starting point for an exciting career in the World Bank. The Program is designed to attract outstanding young individuals from around the world, who have demonstrated a commitment to development, supported by academic success, professional achievement and potential for leadership.

b. The Junior Professional Associates (JPA) Program is a two-year employment opportunity for recent graduates with a superior academic record. Through the Program, JPAs gain first-hand experience and knowledge of international development.

c. The Internship Program is open to students who are nationals of the Bank's member countries and attracts a large number of highly qualified candidates. The goal of this Internship Program is to offer successful candidates an opportunity to improve their skills as well as the experience of working in an international environment. The Program is offered during two seasons: Summer (June-September) and Winter (December-March).
